It's always different when it's the BIG SCREEN.
Enjoyed my experience watching the Ted Talk Conference live stream at Marriot Hotel.
This is my digital notebook. I created this because I find it more convenient and easily accessible to put my thoughts in a blog post than on paper. My posts are vague, drafts and random tidbits I gather here and there. This is the medium I use to clear my thoughts and conceptualize. Much of what I say here might not make sense. Conversations that would help make sense of things, however, are very much welcome.

Ted Talks and Learning Spanish
My graduate school friend (who was also a Spanish Professor) reminded me that I can listen to Ted Talks in Spanish. I suddenly remember that it has been a long time since I watched TED Talks and it would also be helpful for me to listen to Spanish TED Talks and at the same time learn a new idea.
Unfortunately the Spanish language feature in the TED Talk site only meant that the text would be converted to Spanish but the speakers weren't really talking in Español, at all! LOL But it did have Spanish subtitles so I ended up just listening to the talks in English and then reading the transcript.
It still contributes to my learning of a new language. I've been very good in reading in Español already. Okay maybe not VERY good, but in my own standard, I can recognize words comfortably already! I just need to get use to the conjugations and the forms of the verbs (past, present, future tenses). Grammar is such so hard.
But anyway, it does give me also an opportunity to discover and listen to new TED Talks :)
Below are my newest TED faves. .

So many great talks! I need to listen to them again plus read the transcript in Spanish so that I'll be hitting two birds in one stone: Keeping in mind their beautiful and inspiring tips AND practice myself in getting use to the Spanish language. I know I'm only getting better in reading rather in writing or speaking, but this is a great start.

On Love and Passion
The two ted talks below talk about two different things, Scott's talk is about finding the work you love while Mandy's is about the science behind falling in love (with a person).
Love both nevertheless...
How to find the work you love? #Passion

Happy Easter!
Okay so holiday Holy week is almost over and I didn't do any school work as I have told myself would do during the break. But I was able to clean my room!!! Wohoo... actually it just took me two days to do that... The rest of the week I laid on my bed. in my own room. because I missed it so much (good by accumulated crap).
Right now I'm spending the rest of my free time watching TED talks and here are some of my good finds.

What adults can learn from kids - Adora Svitak
I remember the first book I was proud of reading front to back cover (I never really liked to read before and I skip pages).
It was "The Little Prince".
The message from that book stuck in my head for years and years.
"Grown-ups like figures"
Similar to the idea of kids and "grown-ups" a.k.a. adults is the TED Talk of Adora Svitak.
I watched this TEDTalk video during the TEDxDLSU event and I am adding it to my list of favorite Ted Talks.
This is one of the reasons why there is student-centered / learner-centered movement in education...

According to the data of TJ Palanca.. I am restless...
I agree. I am restlessly searching for change and new knowledge.
For me, settling down with the current system is the time you stop the opportunity to grow.
I really love and enjoyed our first TEDxDLSU event.
Not only TED + DLSU are two of my favorite things, but because the theme of Filipino Youth Empowerment resonated with me in so so SOOOOOO many ways.
I don't have a long post because the experience has led me to becoming speechless.
I am overwhelmed. I love every bit of presentation and TEDtalk.
Bottomline.
We can change the world and make it a better place.

On Self Determination Theory & Student Persistence / Student Retention
Understanding the Self-Determination Theory from Ed Deci himself
(one of the founders of the theory)
Edward Deci: Promoting Motivation, Health, and Excellence
In my thesis, I am going to use the Self-Determination Theory (SDT).
What can affect the persistence of students benefiting from financial aid?
Given that financial aid is already an "extrinsic/external" motivator, students benefiting from financial aid still have various levels of motivation.
What else can influence their motivation? What can influence them to persist with their enrollment and eventually to finish their college education?
Let's first learn more about Self-Determination Theory by taking points from Ed Deci's Ted Talk.
"If you are interested in some activity and you enjoy doing it, the motivation is right there inside you ready to come out and move you into action"
"If you really have something that is important to you, something that you truly value, you're perfectly willing to engage in the behavior that are consistent with that"
"So both of these things, these two types of autonomous motivation, are all about being fully willing to behave."
"There are literally hundreds and hundreds and hundreds now of scientific investigations that have shown that when you are autonomously motivated, your behavior will be more creative. You'll be a better problem solver. When you encounter obstacles you will be able to think outside the box and figure out what to do about them."
"Your performance will be better."
"Your emotions will be more positive."
"Autonomous motivation is associated with both physical and psychological health."
"Autonomy support is a way of getting people more autonomously motivated."
"Don't ask how you can motivate other people. That's the wrong way to think about it. Instead, ask, 'How can you create the conditions within which other people will motivate themselves'. And the answer, quite simply, is autonomy support." - Edward Deci.
Let's go back to my thesis on student's persistence.
Given that students who are benefiting from student financial aid are already "externally" motivated by the financial aid (controlled motivation), what else contributes to their student persistence?
If the answer is autonomous motivation, then what are those conditions/situations that are autonomy supportive for students benefiting from student financial aid?

How To Deal With The Daily Deluge Of Emails (And Get The 'Real' WorkDone) - Forbes Article
1) no emails in the morning: DO NOT check email the first hour of the day. If you want to be really productive, do not check email for the first three hours of the day. As you practice this act of self-discipline, you will be astounded at how much more productive you are.
2) set boundaries and stick to them: Setting a schedule is important. It’s also important to separate the urgent from the important. There is always stuff to get done.
3) prioritize ruthlessly: Each evening before you go to bed, ask yourself “What are the three most important things I need to do tomorrow to move my career and company forward?” Write these down. The next morning, instead of checking email, work on these three things first.
4) just say no: To reclaim your time and get the real work done, you need to be ruthless with your choices . If someone requests your presence at a meeting, ask yourself if it’s really necessary before committing. Don’t be afraid to say no. In the end, you will be more productive even if it feels uncomfortable at first
5) bulk task: Take certain mundane tasks such as paying bills, responding to email, and filling out forms, and bulk task them. Rather than constantly distracting yourself in small increments of time, set aside a chunk of time to complete all these small tasks at once.
Number 4 reminds me of the Mindless Accept Syndrome that David Grady mentioned in this TEDtalk
David Grady: How to save the world (or at least yourself) from bad meetings.

Grit is the key to success.
"Grit is passion and perseverance for very long term goals."
"Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in and day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years and working really hard to make that future a reality."
Helping to build grit in kids is the: Growth Mindset.
"This is the belief that the ability to learn is not fixed. That it can change with your effort."
Kids with a growth mindset do not believe that failure is a permanent condition.
Grit is the key to success.
This is a call for researching more ways how we can build GRIT.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! #2015 #TedTalk #TEDxDLSU
An invitation to attend a TED TALK!!
Ever since I discovered TED videos in 2013 during my hiatus (or what Stefan Sagmeister would call 'Power of Time Off'), I have always dreamt of someday being in the audience. Of course it is international so I've actually always wondered how do you attend these events. As I checked the website I saw that you pay a large amount of money to attend an actual TED Conference (not to mention the plane tickets to go to the venue as well).
Until one day a friend of mine said that DLSU is actually hosting a TEDxEvent!!!
The slots were really limited with only 100 participants to be chosen. I really got scared of the chances especially it wasn't on a first come first serve basis but it was based on an application form you submit.
I don't remember what I wrote there (I sure now wished I kept a screen shot of it) but what's important right now actually is that I can't believe I actually got chosen to watch this rare event!!!!!!!!!!!
I literally screamed when I saw this email and my mom scolded me because she thought something went wrong. I just joyfully told her that I got chosen to watch TED!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh the simple joys of those who are always in a pursuit of knowledge, meaningful information and #IdeasWorthSpreading

How to make work-life balance work.
It's a holiday today and for the past months since February of this year I have been working full-time in my university as compared to my life last year when I was a full-time Mooc-er.
I am supposed to start writing my M.A. thesis today but I put it off by jumping back to my old life and checking up on my academic twitter, academic blog, academic facebook, mooc-friends, and also browsing Ted Talks.
Ever since I started working full-time in my university you would obviously observe the frequency drop of my online activity. Oh how I miss learning random but meaningful things... Now that I have a full-time job, the only learning that happens are things that are actually related on how to perform my "job task" correctly. When I tweet to my online friend from Australia, Tanya Lau (she is also taking MA and doing her thesis) the only update I have on my thesis is telling her that... "Life got in the way..."
Now that I have full-time job... I can totally relate to this Ted Talk of Nigel Marsh about Work-Life Balance.
"I found it quite easy to balance work and life, when I didn't have work" - Nigel Marsh
Nigel Marsh: Work Life Balance is an Ongoing Battle
"If you don't design your life, someone else will design it for you, and you may just not like their idea of balance."
The art and skill of work-life balance is difficult to master, but I have been in my job for about only 8 months... So I think I'm picking up very quick with the balance.
On other news, my university is holding a Ted Talk convention on January 2015!!
Definitely coming...

Embracing the remix.
The Remix Culture
I'm just posting one of those TED Talks that I like.
I just feel so sad because there are international psychologists whom I've talked to and are interested but I am not proud of it anymore because somebody already did it.
Everything happens for a reason (or so I tell myself).
I want to bury the topic on academic procrastination and start a new direction, which is on MOOCs, Online Learning & E-learning.
It's definitely a bigger ocean than mere academic procrastination behavior...

Kirby Ferguson: Embracing The Remix
Saw this video because of this article: How Remix Culture Fuels Creativity & Invention
Good artists copy. Great artists steal. - Picasso
But what if it is YOU who was stolen from?
Great artists steal. But not from Steve Jobs. - Kirby Ferguson
This reminds me of my undergrad thesis proposal story that I want to bury forever. Although it still haunts me every now and then. I could narrate the story here (I actually did, then decided to delete it), but narrating it would lose the whole point of "burying" it. I'm just going to do really really good on my masteral thesis so it can overlap the memory of my 'stolen' undergraduate thesis idea.

TED TALKS: Ideas worth spreading
During my hiatus, I discovered a new hobby.
Watching TED talk Videos.
I posted in my previous post a TED Talk by Stefan Sagmeister about The power of time off.
(which I resonate with because I practice it and it has been a life changing & life improving experience)
Here are some of my other TED Talk favorites.
Daphne Koller: What we're learning from online education
The video below, is inspiration to chase your dreams and keep doing what you love to do.
So that when your kid says, "I have a dream." You go and say, "Go for it kid. Just like I did."

The Power of Time Off
Watch Stefan Sagmeister's TED TALK: The Power of Time Off
I have always had the habit of giving myself time off... it always felt good even if it was against the main stream of society which makes me feel that I wasn't doing the "responsible" or "right" thing.
But every time I give myself a "time off", I come back to reality with more vigor to live.
This TED TALK inspires me, as well as the comments about the video.
It makes me feel that yes, I am doing the right and healthy thing.
