English & Spanish Grammar, Biology, Engineering and Psychology

What has been keeping me busy these days?

When you chose a career that is dependent on your capacity to absorb knowledge and learning, it really exhausts the mind.

I've sentenced myself to a life long learning.

In my homeschool, I have been teaching the kids English Grammar Structure & Writing, as well as, the different systems of the body (Skeletal, Muscular, Circulatory, Digestive, Respiratory and etc.).

In my personal self-learning, I try to work on my Spanish courses during my free time.

For my career and work related, I am currently writing a paper on Mechatronics Engineering and currently studying Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Psychology.

HAYYYY information overload!

Times like these I just really want to quit life and be a house cat.

A house cat who just sits and lay around the house, waiting for somebody to feed them, not minding other people in the house and asking for affection whenever I feel like it.

On another hand, I do enjoy what I do.

I guess this is just really a matter of life-balance.

I also need to continue reading

1) Why do nations fail?

&

2) How to be a gentleman?

Wew... I wish I was a robot and can just scan and put a memory card in my head.

Teaching myself the Spanish Language

How Do I Learn Languages On My Own?

The movie was a very nice movie. I know that there are patriots from both in Spain and here in the Philippines that think that the movie is a hyperbole or a depiction to manipulate or insult the past, but there's always two sides of every story. And for every story you will always figure out which ones stay the same and consistent.

As for my Spanish listening skills, I will continue to watch movies in Spanish. I would probably watch this movie again and rather than focusing on the story, I would now focus on the words.

Reading and writing in Spanish and hopefully it becomes natural for me.

I really love watching movies that are based from true stories and at the same time allows me to research about that particular story and find out more about it online.

Mi Libros En Español Que Me Ayuda Practicar Mi Español

I will need to have actual conversations in Spanish before I learn how to Speak and Listen, naturally. But I guess learning how to Read and Write in Spanish is a good start for me in learning a third language.

I'm still a beginner but it amazes me when I skim through a page and read words in Spanish that I can actually understand what was written. I may not be able to interpret them word per word but the context clues already build images in my head. I think that's how reading a heavy material works anyway. We read using context clues.

It feels so exciting! I haven't been excited like this for many weeks now. Probably because I haven't really had set myself personal goals as of late. I've been taking my Babbel courses but some days it tires me because it feels completely just studying and just that. But reading books in Spanish is more than just studying the language but the stories I read, it makes me feel so alive.

"We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. " - Dead Poet's Society

Si Quieres Recoger Miel, No Des Puntapies A La Colmena

If you want honey, don't kick over the beehive.

The first chapter in the book of Cómo Ganar Amigos e Influir Sobre Las Personas por Dale Carnegie.

The book suggest that the reader create notes per chapter so as to create memory retention of the information you get from the book.

I'll try to do this in hopes that the things I will learn from the book will help me in my life. I've had this book since 2012 but I haven't really had the heart to really use it as a bible. Well here it goes..

Chapter 1 basically says that the human reaction when you criticize or find fault in a person is that they will only defend and justify their behavior. Most people will never admit they are wrong because in their own eyes what they are doing is what is right. "If you want honey, don't kick over the beehive."

I would believe this, usually... because that normally happens a lot. But then I also know there are other people who always beat themselves for blaming themselves for everything that goes wrong. I believe in psychology it's called the locus of control. Do we believe that situations are caused by external factors? or Do we believe that situations are caused by internal factors (which is ourselves).

The chapter basically says "Don't condemn, criticize or complain."

OK. NOTED.

I guess I have to make a blog post about this now because knowing my personality this is something I always do. I have a straightforward personality and I don't sugarcoat or pacify or beat around the bush when I want to say something. Which reminds me what I've read from the Paris Hilton diary I got, Paris' says.. "If you can't say anything nice.. say it to somebody you trust."

OR... maybe we should just stick to the old cliche that says "If you can't say anything nice, don't say it at all."

I remember a colleague and a professor telling me that I am very good at pointing out mistakes or finding how to improve a certain service or system. To these colleagues and to my professor, this was a good skill... but I guess it also just comes out natural for me?

The challenge I have to give myself now is to learn how to be situational. To identify which comments will actually have a say in making things better, or maybe the rest of the time.. I'll just keep a private note to myself.

If you want to gather honey, don't kick the beehive.

There you go.  It's kinda like the saying, "You get more bees with honey than vinegar."

To be fair to myself, I believe I had already applied this whenever I am making a complaint with customer services. The younger me, would write an angry letter, make a mad phone call or go to the service office agitated and annoyed. I would sometimes get things my way, but in the end I know that I just pissed both of us off. But the more mature me, already found the trick of getting things your way without leaving a bad note. "Ask really really nice." Such basic knowledge that was taught to us as a child until we grew up and was influenced by society.

I would ask nice. Sometimes beg for help. And I would also really come out helpless. The truth is, it really IS under the other person's decision or control whether or not they would help me (or the customer). Sometimes I just give our a big *sigh* because I know that the way "things work" won't allow things to happen as I would have expected it to be. But most of the time, I end the complaint satisfied and happy. I also always try to make sure I express my gratitude and greet the person behind that computer, phone or counter. They're just doing their job after all.

I guess in that situation I know I have applied what I have learned from this book years ago. But now I think I need to bring it a little step further and apply it to my family, friends and even at work.

"Don't criticize, condemn and complain."

God, personal development is really a continuous learning for improvement.

Cómo gana amigos e influir sobre las personas.

I got the Spanish version of one of my favorite books "How to make friends and influence people" by Dale Carnegie.

I figured that I haven't finished re-reading it because I always feel like I prefer finishing my Spanish lessons. So I realized that maybe I can hit two birds with one stone by reading the Spanish version of the book. I'll be able to read the book again and develop my Spanish vocabulary. Sure it will probably take me a long time to finish this one but heck... two birds.

Life Priorities

As I start a new year, it's time to identify the things I'm going to prioritize.

Mental exercise: Graduate School's over *hooray* .. That's something I've strived to accomplished the previous year.

As to exercise my brain I need to read more about E-learning trends and Educational Technology and less reading on current events which is more often a joke nowadays. I also need to keep up with my Spanish enrollment.

Physical fitness: I've stopped going to yoga altogether and I haven't gone hiking for the past year. I feel like my tummy is becoming bothersome already because my metabolism isn't the same as it was when I was younger.

I'm turning 30 this year for crying out loud! Aaaagh...

Last Saturday my friend and I went rock climbing. We only went for two climbs and then we were dead tired afterwards.

On a good note it did get me moving. After many months of just eating and laying down in bed.. It finally got me moving.

I really feel guilty of being lazy and it seems like yoga is something I'm bored with as of the moment.. I remember the last time I went to yoga, I felt like I was dragging myself to yoga class. I already have my inner peace. I think I have too much of it already. What I want right now is for the fat in my tummy to go away.

I've always been goal oriented type of person. I know if I set myself with a goal I'll commit to it. All I need is to align myself with certain goals.

I went to school today, and I discovered that the Gold's Gym in my university has (finally) opened. I've been thinking about going to the gym for the past months because I know for the fact I haven't been doing any physical activity for the past months. After giving up yoga, I haven't done any exercise. I need work-life balance.

Adult life is really hard. Aside from the mental exercise, you also have to balance it with physical exercise and at the same time budgeting your expenses to achieve all these exercises. The other option is laying down in bed the whole day doing nothing and spending nothing. But if I do that, what kind of life am I trying to live?

I guess gym is also the answer to my thoughts recently... As I've been telling my friends that I've lost my motivation to wake up for the past few days. After finishing my masters, I've lost any desire of accomplishing anything. There is nothing I want to desire anymore. I need new goals.

But now that I have enrolled in the gym for one-year subscription ... I have a new past time... If one day I feel bored, then all I have to do is go to the gym and get some exercise. I have to redirect my energy and instead of spending it on additional food (thus gaining weight), I'll have a physical activity.

Let's do this.

So what are my goals this year?

*Continuesly study my Spanish Lessons.
*Read on E-Learning and Educational Technology
*Go to the gym and lose weight
*Save money & stop craving sweets (I guess carbs are fine if I'm going to do exercises from now on)

*Apply for Canadian Tourist Visa
*Plan a vacation sometime June/July
*Prepare for Convention in September

Let's do this Toni!

Graduation Gift

I'm just going to make a short a quick post of the graduation gift I gave myself. I was on vacation for a while and it disconnected me from blogging about academic things. I'm about to go back to talking about my career and profession, just after sharing some of my favorite photos of my trip.

Phoenix, Arizona

Los Angeles, California

Portland, Oregon

San Antonio, Texas

San Francisco, California

Bellingham, Washington
Seattle, Washington

I had a great time during my trip. Sometimes I can't believe that I was able to travel on my own. Of course I always had somebody else with me when I went out. But I think I have to give myself some credit for riding airplanes on my own. I love meeting new people. I love traveling. I love going to new places I've never been before.

Learning isn't limited to formal education. There are so many things you learn from stepping out of the comfort zone. There are so many things you learn from talking to people outside your culture.

I'm patting myself on the back for the experiences I've experienced. There's so much more to learn.

For now, we go back to the grind. We go back to work.

There are upcoming events that's keeping me busy as of the moment.

1) The IT Cup event hosted by my work. January 21, 2017 / February 18, 2017
2) EduTech 2017 Conference February 20-22, 2017
3) Edtech Manila Meet-up for people with Edtech Start-up companies

I'm thinking if I'm giving up my role on developing standards for online assessments. I'm still thinking about it. It seems too idealistic but there is lack of commitment from people, especially this is a volunteer task. I feel like there are more things that I can invest my time on.

Meanwhile, I've already finished Beginner Course 3 of my Spanish Lessons.

Graduation Gift & Spanish Classes

It's funny that my last post was about me stressing out on my planned travel.

It's been a month already since I left the Philippines and been moving around different states of America. It's been fun. I'm not gonna talk much about it but just probably upload photos in another post.

Hopefully next time I leave the country, I won't be as stressed as I was when I was planning this trip.

Relax. Tranquillo.

In the mean time, I want to share an update that I've purchased a year subscription on Babbel for Spanish Classes. I've met a lot of Spanish speaking individuals during this trip and I barely remember my Spanish lessons. I'm going to take it seriously this time so I can prepare myself the next time I go back here.

Here's my first certificate for finishing Beginner's Course 1.

Yo Hablo Español Ahora :)

I just started learning Spanish this month and I'm so proud of my progress.

Such a fast learner, yes I am.

I just had to self acknowledge this because I know a lot of people here must have known this language before I did.

But for a month as a newbie? .. And now I have a community of Spanish native speakers around the world talking to me and helping me with those damn conjunctions? I'm proud. ...

I'm just not so proud about the progress of my thesis revisions. CURSES!!!!!

#CurseThesisIHateYou

Blooper: to add to my learning progress, I think I just asked somebody how many buttholes he has! LOL

How can I forget using Ñ when that letter is an integral part of my family name?? 😂

Anos = butthole

Años = year

Spanish notes. Spanish everyday.

I still have a long way to go to become a Spanish speaker. The gap between being an amateur to a fluent speaker still frustrates me, but I know I barely had a month since I started so I have to give myself some slack.

Qué quiere hacer hoy? What do you want to do today?

Quiero ir a ver una pelikula. I want to go see a movie.

Cuándo irá el estudiante a la oficina Del maestro? When will the student go to the teacher's office?

I'm doing lots of things to practice my Spanish. Listening to Spanish songs and reading it's translation and trying to memorize it. Listening to dialogues and reading its translation and trying to memorize it. Not missing a streak in Duolingo to practice my vocabulary knowledge. Listening to tutorial videos. But I'm lacking in speech practices which is why I feel like my tongue is tied. What's the use of speaking in Spanish if I'm not vocally practicing it right?

At the least if I keep practicing everyday, I'm hoping that I'll be able to develop my Spanish speaking skills, right? Let's see. I have my blog to document my progress.

Qué quiere hacer hoy?

In Spanish the H is always silent.

Qué quire hacer hoy?

What do you want to do today?

Quiero ir a ver una pelikula.
I want to go see a movie.

Gaaaaaah >_<

Must must must be patient.

Spanish test and then some.

My day yesterday started very stressful. (Mi dia ayer comenzar muy estresado) lol .. okay I don't even know if I was able to write that in spanish right. I'll just stick to english first.

So I started my day yesterday very stressed, with school.. stuff at home... stuff at work... everything just seems to just not fall into it's place correctly. I was so stressed I felt like shouting just to release my rage. There were just too many things going on in my head and the tiniest thing annoys me. One of the things that caused me stress was the thought that I had to still work on my thesis even after submitting it. Revisions, revisions, revisions. I just don't get this cycle anymore! I already want to graduate!

So anyway I told my bestfriend that I wanted to hang out with her so I took a cab and went to one of the coffee shops near her office and waited for her there. I was busy listening to TED Talks and reading the Spanish subtitles trying to enhance my new skill.

When my bestfriend arrived the coffee shop we were there just talking and then I was trying to show her my Spanish materials and then I tried practicing my Spanish lessons. A few minutes later, this guy who sat a few chairs away faced us and asked "Are you trying to learn Spanish?". Of course we were both surprised because this stranger just started talking to us, and then my bestfriend pointed to me and then the guy approached us and then I started sharing my learning endeavor. Turns out the guy was from Spain. haha. I felt a little shy because he probably was annoyed of my crude Spanish phonetics and had to interrupt and teach me the right way. LOL kidding he's a nice guy. Turns out he knows 5 languages. My bestfriend wanted to learn French and turns out our new friend knows french too. and arabic.. and korean...

Basically the night ended up discussing about languages, culture, the world, religion, politics, dating, life... It was a good night despite a bad morning.

It was as if it as a moment that I had to test what I've learned for the past 2 weeks in my attempts to learn Spanish.

It was also a good thing that I've been recently watching Crash Course on Youtube, World History Play list because I was able to related with a lot of the European related conversations.

Our new friend was well read and well traveled. These are the people that I really enjoy talking to. I enjoy the mental stimulation.

The first time I ever met a new friend in a coffee shop. It was a very very interesting moment and definitely a better place to meet new friends as compared to hostels and bars.

I never made a mistake on investing my time learning a new language. I knew that it would really open an opportunity to meeting more people and being able to engage with them more.

All is well that ends well!

Ted Talks and Learning Spanish

My graduate school friend (who was also a Spanish Professor) reminded me that I can listen to Ted Talks in Spanish. I suddenly remember that it has been a long time since I watched TED Talks and it would also be helpful for me to listen to Spanish TED Talks and at the same time learn a new idea.

Unfortunately the Spanish language feature in the TED Talk site only meant that the text would be converted to Spanish but the speakers weren't really talking in Español, at all! LOL But it did have Spanish subtitles so I ended up just listening to the talks in English and then reading the transcript.

It still contributes to my learning of a new language. I've been very good in reading in Español already. Okay maybe not VERY good, but in my own standard, I can recognize words comfortably already! I just need to get use to the conjugations and the forms of the verbs (past, present, future tenses). Grammar is such so hard.

But anyway, it does give me also an opportunity to discover and listen to new TED Talks :)

Below are my newest TED faves. .

El ingrediente mágico que da vida a las películas de Pixar

El secreto de una gran charla TED

La guía nerd para aprender de todo en línea

Cómo mantener la calma cuando se sabe que se va a estar estresado

10 reglas para conversar mejor

This one is not a TED Talk but a great reminder to
focus on the good things that are happening in your life.

Learn to Focus on the Right Things
"Srikumar Rao, author of Happiness at Work, says to look with appreciation on the things you do have, and to assess what you really need in life."

So many great talks! I need to listen to them again plus read the transcript in Spanish so that I'll be hitting two birds in one stone: Keeping in mind their beautiful and inspiring tips AND practice myself in getting use to the Spanish language. I know I'm only getting better in reading rather in writing or speaking, but this is a great start.
